Night City is getting another upgrade. CD PROJEKT RED has announced Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, a free update built around the newly released Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 anime. It lands on Thursday, 22 October 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The announcement comes on the day all ten episodes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 became available on Netflix, a standalone story set in the same universe as the game.

What Update 2.5 adds

CD PROJEKT RED has confirmed the update carries content inspired by the anime, along with new items and gameplay features. Two additions have been teased so far:

  • Cyberware customisation – new ways to change how your character's cybernetic equipment looks and works.
  • Dual-wielding – a new playstyle that adds a second weapon to fights and opens up new options in combat.

CD PROJEKT RED will present the update on a special REDstreams episode on Wednesday, 21 October, with the official patch notes due to follow. You can watch through the official Cyberpunk 2077 REDstreams page.

When can you download it?

The release schedule currently looks like this:

  • PC: Thursday, 22 October 2026
  • PlayStation 5: Thursday, 22 October 2026
  • Xbox Series X|S: Thursday, 22 October 2026
  • Nintendo Switch 2: coming shortly after the initial release

Update 2.5 is free for anyone who owns the game. CD PROJEKT RED has not published the complete patch notes, so download size, exact release times and the rest of the change list remain unconfirmed.

What it means for South African players

There is nothing to buy. Update 2.5 is free, but you do need a copy of the base game to install it.

The one thing worth planning for is the download. CD PROJEKT RED has not published the size of the patch, and Night City is a large game to update. If your data is capped or your connection is shared, clear space on the drive and check your plan before Thursday.

Night City is still going strong

Cyberpunk 2077's journey has been remarkable. The troubled launch in December 2020 was followed by years of patches, the substantial Update 2.0 overhaul and the Phantom Liberty expansion, which turned the game into a much stronger RPG.

The original Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime also brought in a new audience, showing how a good adaptation can revive interest in a game that is already years old. With Edgerunners 2 on Netflix, CD PROJEKT RED is once again connecting its animated universe to the game itself.

What happens next?

Wednesday's REDstreams should show what Update 2.5 really contains, along with the full patch notes. Until then, treat the confirmed cyberware customisation and dual-wielding as a preview rather than the complete feature list.

Our advice: Watch the REDstreams on Wednesday before you plan your time around the update. CD PROJEKT RED has not published the full feature list yet, and patch notes tend to carry the detail that decides whether an update is worth the download.

If you have not played since Phantom Liberty went live, or you only know Night City from the anime, Thursday is a good reason to switch the game back on. We will report the full patch notes once CD PROJEKT RED publishes them.
